Song of the Month: Metric, Moral Compass

Metric released their tenth album, Romanticize the Dive, this month. Unfortunately I found this another weak one, and after three in a row I’m forced to confront the possibility my long time favourite band has finally lost their edge.

The one song that’s really hooked me off Romanticize is Moral Compass. Something about the haunting synth notes reminds me of some of the better parts of Road 96’s soundtrack, a great association if ever there was one.

  1. Pagans was a low for them but they’ve be very solid ever since. 3 weak albums in a row is a wild statement. Metric has been evolving their sound for a minute now and it’s a real breathe of fresh air

    • Hmm, agree to disagree. Pagans was one of my all time favourites, behind only Live It Out and Grow Up and Blow Away, but I just have not been feeling the stuff from Formentera on (with a few exceptions — Who Would You Be for Me was excellent). I don’t see it as evolving their sound; if anything that’s my core complaint, their sound is stagnating. The last three albums all just sound rehashed Synthetica to me. Indeed I listened to an interview with Jimmy the other day and replicating their sound from older albums was explicitly the goal with Romanticize the Dive, which I can understand the impulse for but I think was ultimately a waste of their talents. They’re a band that’s at their best when looking forward, not back.
