Review: Sanctuary, “Acolyte”

Review: Sanctuary, “Acolyte”

I hate average episodes. They’re boring to review.

Sanctuary logo“Acolyte” continues the arc of the Abnormal terrorists leftover from the Hollow Earth invasion. It’s a very middle of the road episode. It didn’t thrill me like last week’s did, but nor did it fill me with table-flipping nerdrage.

However, “Acolyte” is noteworthy for two reasons.

The first is a guest appearance by Kate Freelander, who was written out of the show at the beginning of the season. If you’ve been reading my blog regularly, you will by now be familiar with my hatred of this character, but she managed not to stink up the screen too much this time. In fact, she hardly did anything at all — to the point where one wonders why they even bothered including her.

The second — and this is a bit of a spoiler, so skip this paragraph if you don’t want to know more — is that it features a rather shocking out of the blue betrayal by one of the Sanctuary team members. This story is left somewhat unresolved by the episode’s end, so I can’t really judge it until I see how it fully plays out. But I will say that as of right now, I’m not a fan of this direction.

“Acolyte” was exciting enough, and it did advance the season’s main arc, so it deserves some credit for that. But in the end, I can’t help but be left with the feeling it was a very by-the-numbers episode.

Overall rating: 7.0/10
